Local Newspapers Media Ownership Rules Relaxed

National Heritage Minister Iain Sproat yesterday announced a further relaxation of cross-media ownership rules. The new arrangements will allow local newspapers with more than a 50% share of their market to own a radio station in the area concerned, (providing that there is at least one other independent local radio station in operation in the area.)

Iain Sproat said, “At present no local newspaper may own more than 20% of a company which operates a local radio service in the same area. It was announced on 1st May that local newspapers with a market share of between 20% and 50% would be allowed to own one AM and one FM licence in the area, irrespective of the number of other local stations. Today’s announcement reflects the concern of the local newspaper industry. At the same time it will maintain the balance we are seeking to achieve between deregulation for the benefit of the industry and protecting the consumer from unhealthy concentrations of media ownership at local or regional level.”
