London Licences Advertised – Including Capital
The Radio Authority has announced the advertisement of six ILR licences for the Greater London area. Three of these are on the FM waveband, and three on the AM waveband.
Two of the licences are existing ones, currently held by Capital Radio (Capital FM and Capital Gold on AM). The Capital licences expire on 15 October 1995. Capital, began broadcasting in October 1973. The four new licences also offer Londonwide coverage; the two FM licences will utilise frequencies on the 105-108 MHz sub-band.
The Authority cannot specify in advance the programme content of any local licensee’s service. However, the Authority is required to broaden audience choice, and has said that it is unlikely to award the new licences to stations offering services already offered by existing stations; ie jazz or ethnic programming. (Jazz FM, Spectrum Radio.)
The closing date for applicants is June 28th, and the announcement of successful applications will be four months later.
