London Tonight Splits – Home & Away Moved
From 1 May, London Tonight, Carlton and LWT’s early evening news programme is to switch from an hour-long 6pm slot to a programme of two halves from Monday to Thursday, taking Home and Away’s early evening slot.
The first half will begin at 5.10pm, followed at 5.40pm by the ITN News. Home and Away will occupy the 6pm slot, against the BBC’s main early evening news. The second part of London Tonight will be at 6.25pm. The first half will cover features and entertainment, with the second half covering the news of the day. LWT’s Friday programme will stay as it is for the time being.
The move comes as a bid to increase ratings; the show suffers as a result of ITN’s poor performance against BBC1’s Neighbours. ITN’s early evening news attracts around 5.5-6m viewers, compared to around 11m for Neighbours. The BBC early evening news at 6pm attracts 7m viewers. London Tonight, according to their own figures, currently attracts around 1-1.2m viewers.
