Magazine Brief

Magazine Brief
  • Regional Independent Media has acquired two Scottish-based publications to expand its magazine portfolio. Writers News, a subscription-only monthly, and Writing Magazine, a bi-monthly available in newsagents, will be relocated to the Yorkshire Post Newspapers office in Leeds.
  • Sleazenation Ltd, publishers of the style mag of the same name, has acquired Manchester-based music and clubbing title Jockey Slut for an undisclosed sum. Due to the acquisition the group has decided to rebrand itself under the name Swinstead Publishing and has announced plans to launch a youth-dedicated trade publishing arm for contract work.
  • Year Zero is described by its owner and publisher Adam Porter as “a cross between Newsweek and the Economist“. Porter is a former GQ journalist and managing editor of Loaded and launched the mag for people “fed up with PR blurbs”. It is priced £1 and is available in newsagents now.
  • Hip Hop Connection has undergone a revamp a month after was taken over by Future Publishing. It is hoped that the new masthead, increased pagination and a larger reviews and listings guide will increase sales for the mag, which were down almost 25% in the latest figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) (see January-June 1999 ABCs – Performance By Publisher).
