Magazine Closures As Swinstead Publishing Folds

Magazine Closures As Swinstead Publishing Folds

Niche magazine publisher Swinstead Publishing has announced that it is to close, in a move that signals the demise of style magazine Sleaze Nation and music quarterly Jockey Slut.

The publisher is understood to have broken the news of its impending closure to employees on Friday, claiming that its investors had withdrawn their funding and that liquidation was now unavoidable.

The announcement comes just weeks after flagship style title Sleaze Nation underwent a facelift and rebranded as Sleaze. Jockey Slut had also been given a makeover and recently expanded its website to win back online readers.

Reports suggest that the revamped titles were performing well with an increase in both sales and advertising revenue. However, it has been mooted that Swinstead’s liquidation is unconnected to the performance of titles.

The closures are the latest in a long list of titles to have faced the axe in the last few months. Dennis Publishing recently dropped its monthly women’s health and beauty magazine Shape after failing to compete for advertising revenue in the increasingly crowded sector (see Dennis Out Of Shape As Women’s Title Is Dropped).

Emap Performance also recently announced the closure of its teen stalwart J-17 and ended the twenty-five year run of The Face after failing to find a buyer for the veteran style bible, which helped to define the sounds and styles of the last three decades.
