Magazines Benefit In Media Slowdown

The PPA has reported good news for print media, as new figures from ACNielsen MMS show that magazines have increased their share of main media adspend year on year. The figures show that in the year to September 2000 the magazine industry’s share was 15.6%, while in the year to September 2001 it was up 1.2 percentage points to 16.8%. Newspapers also saw a modest rise of less than half a percentage point to 20.7% in the same comparison.

AC Nielsen’s figures are reported to show a 1.4 percentage point drop in TV’s share of ad revenue, to 54.5%, while Radio stayed steady at 8%. While the advertising revenue across the market fell £330m overall when these periods are compared, advertising revenue for magazines increased by £25m.

It can be noted that these figures do not show the effects of the US terrorist attacks, but they appear to suggest that as the market has hit tough times, advertisers have made a positive move towards print media.
