MAI Planning Cable & Satellite Channels

MAI, the cash-rich financial services and media group, is considering a number of media developments, and would be well-placed to launch cable and satellite channels, but, contrary to reports by Raymond Snoddy in today’s FT, “there is not timetable in place”, according to Richard Saunders, Director of Development and Communications at MAI.

Mr Saunders told MediaTel that cable and satellite would be the next logical for MAI, which already owns Anglia TV and Meridian, unless TV ownership restrictions are relaxed, but no announcements are imminent, and numbers of channels and content have not been determined. Today’s FT reports that two channels could be launched as early as next year.

MAI’s assets include the Anglia TV library; “Survival” library, the ITEL film library (joint venture with HBO); Cosgrave Hall (animation); and sport through SIS racing services, plus financial information – so there would be many sources to draw on for new channels.

MAI expects news of its Channel 5 bid in October or November.
