Media Merger Go Ahead
The Department of Trade and Induttry has opened the floodgates of a new burst of media mergers by declaring that the proposed merger of United News and Media and MAI need not be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
The deal is now just awaiting clearance from the shareholders of MAI; United’s shareholders have already given their approval. The DTI also approved the warehousing scheme proposed by United/MAI; this is likely to encourage other media companies to use the same method of shareholding structure before the introduction of the new Bill.
The DTI also approved the acquisition by Northcliffe Newspapers of the Nottingham Property Guide.
