MediaTel Group’s sixth Media Question Time, held on Wednesday 1 November, promises to be a lively and informative evening, with top industry experts lined up for the debate.
The event, held at RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London, W1, will be chaired by BBC media correspondent, Torin Douglas, a regular at MediaTel Group’s topical media seminars.
This year’s Question Time panel includes: Richard Eyre, chairman of the IAB; Jim Hytner, group marketing director of Barclays; Stevie Spring, chief executive of Future plc; Andrew Walmsley, founder, i-level; and Guy Zitter, managing director, Daily Mail.
At previous MQT’s, the debate has often been heated, with industry figures using the forum to air strong views. When the Express newspaper’s war with the Daily Mail was at its peak, Five’s marketing and communications director, Jim Hytner, used the MQT to give advice to the then new owner of the Express, Richard Desmond.
Hytner said the paper should stop worrying about its Mid Market rival, the content of which is out of touch with life in the 21st century.
“The Daily Mail is a rag which no self-respecting fish would want to be wrapped in,” he said. “My advice to Richard Desmond is to focus on the whole national newspaper market and develop a secure position.”
John Billett, chairman and founder of Billetts, also had strong words to say. “The world is full of people ready to part with their money and a fool and his money are very quickly parted,” he said. “Why doesn’t he stay in the porno area where he is the king and enjoy himself?”
Other issues raised at earlier MediaTel Group Question Time events have included ITV’s Contract Rights Renewal, the future of digital radio and the BBC’s licence fee.
