Men Behave Badly On The BBC
An episode of the BBC’s popular series Men Behaving Badly has come under attack from viewers, according to the latest report from the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC). The episode, which appeared during the Christmas season of last year, received 18 complaints about the level of sexual innuendo in the programme, particularly scenes suggesting masturbation in the wake of watching sex videos.
The Standards Panel concluded that because the episode was screened around the Christmas season, when viewing patterns change and generations gather for family celebrations, it would have been likely to embarrass or offend. The complaint was upheld.
A fair amount of programmes precipitated complaints about bad language and sexual innuendo, including a Chris Moyles’ radio show on Radio 1, Noel’s House Party, and Zoe Ball’s breakfast show. Complaints were upheld against all of these, as well as the Jerry Springer show for violence.
Even the children’s programme Sooty & Co drew complaints about inappropriate content for young people. The programme, called ‘Natures Way’, was about homeopathic and natural remedies, but the Panel concluded that the episode may have encouraged children to sniff substances from bottles, and had they not understood the dialogue, there was the risk that they would not be able to discriminate between different types of pills.
