MEPs Vote For TV Restrictions

MEPs Vote For TV Restrictions

The European parliament has voted in favour of proposals which would force European broadcasters to screen a quota of European-made programmes. The parliament voted by 292 to 195 for proposals which would oblige general content television channels to screen at least 51 per cent ‘home grown’ programmes.

They also voted to tighten restrictions on commercial minutage. Under these proposals, adverts will not be allowed in news, factual or children’s programmes that run for less than 30 minutes. The break in News At Ten is therefore threatened.

These proposals will now be looked at by the Council of Ministers and Commission after which the parliament will vote on them again.
