MGM Put Up For Sale

MGM, Britain’s largest Cinema chain, has been put up for sale by its French owners, Credit Lyonnais. There are already reported to have been around 30 expressions of interest in the chain, with Steven Spielberg rumoured to be one of the interested parties. Any interest from the UK would have to come from one of the smaller cinema groups such as Warner Bros, as a recent Monopolies and Mergers Commission report rules out larger contenders such as Rank.

MGM has 416 screens in the UK on 120 sites. The MMC report estimated that MGM took 25% of the £290m box office receipts in 1993. The group also has screens in Denmark and the Netherlands.
