MGN Pulls Out Of Complaints Commission
The future of press self-regulation has been thrown into further doubt after the three newspapers of the Mirror Group; Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the People, have pulled out of the Press Complaints Commission.
Peter Brooke, national heritage secretary, warned that the publication of the photographs by MGN demonstrated the shortcomings of self-regulation and increased the likelihood of statutory controls on press freedom. The MGN withdrawal could totally undermine the present commission.
Advertisers, after yesterday being urged by the chairman of the Press Complaints Commission Lord McGregor to boycott the Mirror, have shown mixed reaction. The RAC, who yesterday had an ad facing photos of the Princess, was the first advertiser to cancel advertising. Autoglass has also said that it will be dropping ads from the Mirror. However, W H Smith, HMV and Vauxhall all said they did not take advertising decisions based on the editorial policy of newspapers.
