Tony O’Reilly is coming to London this week for talks with Newspaper Publishing. His visit comes at the same time as reports that the rival consortium led by Mirror Group Newspapers may increase its bid for the group to £3 a share.
The consortium will be after a recommendation from Ian Hay Davison, the non- executive chairman. Without such a recommendation the bid would automatically be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Because of the papers’ financial difficulties, there is a possiblilty of quick approval, the chances of which would be much improved with a recommendation.
