Microsoft Webzine To Charge For Access
Microsoft’s online magazine Slate will begin charging its readers from next year. The magazine launched in 1996 and had intended to become a subscription service after a trial period but the plan was initially shelved.
Michael Kinsey, the editor of the cultural weekly, now believes that there is a growing acceptance among Web users that content should be paid for. He also pointed out that other online magazines have begun to charge subscription fees – among them the Economist and Wall Street Journal.
Though the exact details and timetable have not been decided, it is planned that the extra income will enable the site to develop and improve its service.
