Milton Keynes Citizen Triumphs

For the fourth year in a row, the Milton Keynes Citizen has won the top award, Free Newspaper of the Year (more than 40 pages) in the Newspaper Society’s 1996 free newspaper awards. The judges said it had held its supremacy despite fierce competition.

The Ayr and District Leader was named Free Newspaper of the Year (less than 40 pages). The judges said it had demonstrated that limited pagination was not a barrier to “quality journalism and good design”.

The Yellow Advertiser won the Community Award for “No Deal”, described as a powerful and brilliantly executed campaign. The award for Best Advertisement Feature went to Primetime (Southern Newspapers) for “Golden Charter”, while the Northampton Herald and Post won the award for Best Advertorial, for a piece on the Northamptonshire Police. Wigan Reporter’s “Classifieds” won the category of Most Unusual or Successful Revenue-Generating Idea.
