MIN Chief Boosts Newspaper Future

The regional newspaper of the year 2000 will comprise of a core product and will carry very little advertising, according to the group chief executive of Midland Independent Newspapers, Chris Oakley speaking at the Newspaper Society conference on Friday.
He pointed out that Britain’s newspapers continue to show a creative flair and resilience which will carry them strongly into the 21st century. However, he warns that they must beat off competition from a new wave of printed and electronic competition.
Also speaking at the conference, Richard Winfrey, deputy chairman of EMAP said he believes our regional and local press have never been better equipped to win a greater share of national advertising; “Our newspapers are offering more expertise, more colour and more relevant packages to suit the individual advertiser’s market place” he comments.
