MIRROR CONDEMNED OVER PRINCESS PHOTOS

The Sunday Mirror has attracted wide-spread condemnation over publication of photographs of the Princess of Wales working out in a gymnasium. Further photographs appear in today’s Daily Mirror, which says it will not be “cowed by the hysterical accusations now being made against it”.

Lord McGregor, chairman of the Press Complaints Commission has described the Mirror as an “outlaw”, calling the editor a “dishonourable buffoon”. He urged advertisers to boycott the Mirror.

This latest controversy over invasion of privacy is expected to help those calling for greater controls over the press. The government’s white paper on press and privacy is expected early next year.

Fresh calls will also be made on the newspaper industry to appoint an ombudsman to work alongside the Press Complaints Commission.
