Misleading X-File Receives Complaints
Complaints regarding advertisements for the video release of “The Unopened X-File” have been upheld by the ITC. Protests were made when episodes that had already been shown on Sky were billed as “A special edition X-File, available to buy only on video”. Another complaint stated that part of the video was scheduled to be shown on BBC 1 on 27th February 1996 with the rest to be screened in the Autumn.
The feature length video contains three episodes of the popular television series, the first of which was shown on Sky at the time of advertising, and allowed viewers to see the conclusion of the story in the last two episodes before being shown on British television.
The advertisement of “The Unopened File” did not state that the programme would never be shown on UK television, but advertisers were aware that it would be broadcast in the near future. The ITC concluded that it should have made buyers aware that the episodes were exclusive only for a certain amount of time.
