Mixmag Gets Makeover

Emap has announced a new look for its clubbing title Mixmag. From November, the title’s look will be “more design led with a heavy and imaginative use of photography”. Changes have also been made to the editorial team, in the form of several promotions among existing staff.

Although the title’s circulation slipped slightly period on period in the most recent set of ABC figures, Mixmag has pulled back from a slump in circulation a few years ago, despite dance music’s dwindling popularity.

The magazine’s editor, Tom Whitwell, said: “The aim is to give Mixmag a broader appeal…the new look Mixmag feels younger and fresher with sexy, glamourous photography.”

Unfortunately the music magazine market itself is looking far from young and sexy, despite giving one of its oldest members, Melody Maker the elbow last year (see IPC To Close Melody Maker). The last two sets of ABC figures have seen an overall decline in circulation for the market, while in contrast, magazines focussing on celebrities, such as Heat, have flourished.

Mixmag’s cover price is to remain at £3.85 after the revamp. The first new look issue will include a covermounted CD.
