As reported on Newsline *Westminster Press Sale Referred To MMC, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission will be investigating the £305m sale of Pearson’s Westminster Press to Newsquest Media.
The MMC will be considering whether any of the proposed newspaper transfers “may be expected to operate against the public interest” and will also consider the need for “the accurate presentation of news and free expression of opinion”.
The Commission will make a report to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry by 31 October, who will then decide whether the sale can go ahead or not. The investigating Group will be chaired by Dr Derek Morris, an Oxford Economics fellow, Mark Kersen, deputy chairman of Midland News Association, and Geoffrey Copeman, vice chairman of Eastern Counties Newspaper Group.
