More Flexibility With BSkyB Packages

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has issued a letter to cable companies asking for responses on BSkyB’s ratecard and package deals. Earlier this year the OFT decided that although BSkyB were not operating as a monopoly, it was still difficult for cable operators to compete *(BSkyB Escapes Monopoly Investigation).

According to reports in today’s Financial Times, the responses could lead to more flexibility with BSkyB packages. Currently cable operators have to buy full BSkyB packages and pay 60% of the retail price to dish owners before negotiating fees for non-BSkyB channels. Any changes may lead to cable companies not having to buy complete BSkyB packages and various pricing scales could be negotiated.

The OFT are receiving responses from cable operators until November 5 1996.
