More Group Innovates Outdoor Market With i-plus Kiosks

Adshel, the street furniture division of More Group, has teamed up with new media company Cityspace to launch the first outdoor network of kiosks, delivering customised internet services to the country’s bus passengers. The kiosks, called i-plus, will be installed across the Adshel/London Transport network of bus shelters, piloting in Southwark and Kensington and Chelsea before being rolled out across the UK. There are also plans to develop the network internationally.

The i-plus kiosks will offer advertisers and e-commerce partners the opportunity to reach a ‘captive’ and repeat audience waiting for a bus. London Transport research shows that people on average wait six to seven minutes for their bus to arrive. During this time the i-plus kiosks will allow people to access travel information, buy theatre tickets and get further information on Adshel advertisers.

The internet-based system has been designed to allow users to customise their own channels, controlling the information that appears on them. The job channel, for example, has been developed in association with Reed Personnel Services and will allow users to search across lists of job vacancies. London Transport will also provide a travel information service.

Advertisers and e-commerce companies will be able to sponsor or create their own channels, although access to outside internet sites is not planned at present. Cityspace will operate and develop the i-plus kiosk network. Marc Meyohas, managing director at Cityspace, says: “i-plus is the perfect example of how e-commerce and new media technology can benefit the marketing and advertising industry. Consumer research demonstrates strong interest in a service of this type so I am confident it will prove popular with users and beneficial to advertisers.”

Adshel and Cityspace surveys show that three quarters of people are interested in using the i-plus system and a further 21% of people said they would like more information about the ads on bus shelters.
