Motoring Press Overview – Weeklies

August 25th sees the launch of a new motoring weekly, Carweek, published by EMAP. It will consist of two different sections, an outer colour jacket containing news and features, and an inner section of listings and classified ads. Both sections will be of around 50 pages.

With an Initial Print Run of 300,000, Carweek is aiming to be a close competitor of Auto Trader, the motoring weekly with the largest circulation. Its July-December’92 ABC was 364,000.

The weekly motoring press comprises magazines which are purely classified advertisements, and those which are a mixture of both classified and editorial. Auto Trader itself is all classified but it does have a 24-page colour supplement containing editorial. 30% of the supplement is given over to display ads.

Car Buyer, published by Shaws Publications is entirely dealer adverts and classified.

Of the other more general motoring magazines, Haymarket’s Autocar & Motor has the largest circulation (125,000). Approximately 40% of Autocar is taken up by classified pages. In comparison only 18% of Auto Express is taken up with classifieds. There are also more specialised titles such as Autosport, also from Haymarket, which concentrates on motor-racing. This has 50% classified. Motoring News from News Publications, is a rallying and racing title, with approximately 25% classified ads. Classic Car Weekly, another EMAP title, concentrates on classic cars, with 50% classified.
