Murdoch Challenge To Olympic Coverage
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, together with several undisclosed partners, is believed to have bid $2bn for the rights to all five Olympic Games between 2000 and 2008.
The bid could force the European Broadcasting Union, which is made up of European public service broadcasters, including the BBC, to raise its bid. News Corporation is believed to have criticised past coverage of the Games; and doubts public service broadcasters will be able to fund an adequate bid for the rights by the end of the decade.
News Corp is expected to share the rights with terrestrial and subscription television services throughout Europe.
