Murdoch May Bid For Rights To World Cup

Recent press rumours have speculated that Rupert Murdoch may be making a bid to secure TV coverage of football’s World Cup, although Sky TV refuses to confirm this. Politicians, however, are concerned about the migration of terrestrial sporting coverage to satellite channels. Later this week Conservative politicians will consider amendments to the new Broadcasting Bill which would curb Mr Murdoch’s capacity to buy sporting events: he has secured rights to top boxing matches and could pose a threat to the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon and the Grand National. Labour have also said that they are tabling an amendment which would guarantee terrestrial coverage of top sporting events. Murdoch’s consortium, News Corporation, has recently made a £1.2 billion bid for European TV coverage of the Olympic Games.
