News Corp Ltd., the global media group owned by Rupert Murdoch, has announced an unexpectedly strong profit rise for the first quarter. News Corp’s net profit before abnormals for the three months to 30 September rose 15%; analysts had expected a fall in this area. British newspaper earnings were solid, seeing profits rise 20%. The Sun, Times and Sunday Times all gained in both advertising and circulation revenues.
