MUTV Scraps Its Cable Version

Manchester United has scrapped the cable version of MUTV, its supporters channel, due to a lack of subscribers. Announcing good overall yearly results today, the football club, which is a one-third shareholder in the channel, said that it was no longer viable, with take-up only reaching the thousands.

When the channel launched a year ago it was the first football club-dedicated channel in Britain. Costing £4.99 for a monthly subscription, MUTV broadcast a range of programming relating to the team including footage of training sessions and tips from the club’s chef. Granada and BSkyB are also shareholders.

Its losses for the year totalled £5 million; Manchester United will shoulder £1.7 million. Finance director David Gill said the losses were higher than expected but not unusual. The channel will remain in the Sky Digital version, penetration of which Gill described as satisfactory.
