Muzik – First Issue Review
May 10th saw the first issue of Muzik, a dance music magazine covering House, Techno, Jungle, Garage, Hip Hop, Ambient and Soul genres. The first issue features on DJs, venues, and DJ groupies. Among regular articles are: News, readers letters, club guides, charts, album and single reviews. It has a coverprice of £2.20 (but the first two issues are a special price of 95p) and is monthly.
The front cover of Muzik uses a trendy character set which is seen on some dance CDs and makes Muzik recognisable as a dance magazine.
The magazine says that club culture is now the biggest youth movement of the Nineties and is the “definitive guide to the cutting edge”. Muzik appears to deliver what it promises. In depth interviews are comprehensive. They cover DJs opinions and views on the music and insights into the world of the label. The record reviews are particularly diverse and wide ranging. The attention to detail also extends to club listings and radio listings.
Muzik is aimed at the clubber who wants information about where to go and what to buy. It seems to cater well for the market it is aimed at. Mixmag, a similar magazine had an ABC for Jan-Dec 94 of 43,879.
The ads are predominantly for new releases and gig dates which would appeal to a regular club goer.
Although the magazine has an underground feel, it is published by IPC Magazines. The glossy style captures interest where less polished magazines fail. It has a vast array of information which will interest all those who listen to dance music.
