National Evening Supplement Goes On Trial

Northcliffe Newspapers and Westminster Press are launching a joint trial of an evening national tabloid. Produced by UK News, the press agency jointly owned by Northcliffe and Westminster, the new paper, called the Daily News, has begun a three-month trial.

Four papers have been selected for the trial, the Yorkshire Evening Press, Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, Plymouth Evening Herald and the Basildon Evening Echo; together these four titles give a snapshot of national readership, says Alex Leys, md of UK News. Each title will carry the tabloid supplement of 8 pages, which will contain national news, gossip and TV listings. The Saturday edition will have 12 pages. The supplement should have a circulation of 15,000 per day.

Reaction to the national section will be closely researched. If it proves popular the Daily News could be a feature of all Northcliffe and Westminster Press titles across the country, giving a total circulation of 1 million.
