National Geographic is setting up a new advertising sales operation in London in order to better compete in the crowded European ad market.
The office, which opens today, will be headed up by Steve Middleton, area sales manager of international editions and David Middis, area sales manager of the British Isles edition.
Commenting on the expansion, Michel Siegfried, international advertising director at National Geographic, said: “As the European advertising arena grows more competitive, it is vital that National Geographic have a greater presence in the marketplace. Opening a London office demonstrates our commitment to our clients and also allows us to hire two very talented sales people.”
Prior to joining National Geographic, Middleton was area sales director at Fortune magazine and also worked as a sales executive with the Economist. In his new position he will take responsibility for building ad revenue and creating new opportunities for the London base.
Middis, who has also worked at Emap, will work alongside Middleton to build ad opportunities for the flagship monthly nature title, which is the official journal of the National Geographic Society.
The magazine is published in 23 languages and claims to have a global circulation of about 9 million.

Analysis of the circulation of the National Geographic over the past four years reveals relatively static sales at the title.
Despite gradual declines in the late nineties and early 2000, in the January to June 2003 period the title saw circulation increase by 1.5% year on year to 334,478 from 329,373 in the same period in 2002.
Earlier this year Wireless Group-owned sports radio station talkSPORT secured a deal with the National Geographic Channel to promote a new wildlife series (see TalkSPORT Goes Wild With National Geographic Promotion).
