The national newspaper sector saw an overall increase in sales of over a million copies between December 1999 and January this year, according to the latest data released by the Audit Bureau of Circualtions (ABC). Some particularly strong performances from the News Of The World, Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday Times helped boost the national market by 4.2% to achieve sales of 26.7 million overall.

Quality Market The quality sector as a whole managed to show a one percent improvement in sales year on year, to 5.7 million copies, but this was mainly due to the introduction of a circulation figure for Sunday Business, which wasn’t reporting this time last year.
The Financial Times continues to outperform the market, with an annual increase in sales of 13.1%, despite showing a slight decline on December 1999’s sales. Elsewhere, the only significant movement came from the Times, which saw circulation drop back by 3.5% to just under 725,000.
Mid Market After a very strong spell of domination in the mid market, one of Associated Newspapers’ Mail titles – the Mail On Sunday – has started to slip. In the last two six months audits the paper has seen sales take a dip, this time by just under 20,000 copies. The Daily Mail is still gaining in circulation, whilst the two Express titles continue to fall back.
Popular Market A tough time for the popular tabloids, with all but specialist betting paper Racing Post showing declining sales. The whole sector, which has been dropping for some time, was down 2.6% year on year for the six months to January 2000.
