National Newspaper ABC Round-Up – May 2000

Month On Month Monthly national newspaper circulation figures for May, released by the ABC this week, showed an overall drop in sales of 0.5%. Sport First saw the greatest fall in circulation, down by almost 20% in a month on month analysis. Sunday Business also performed badly, slipping almost 8%.

The most significant increases for the period came from the Sunday Mirror, which saw its circulation base grow by almost 4% and the Sunday Sport, which climbed 3.2%.

Year On Year

Quality Market Sales of the Sunday Business leapt 28% in a year on year analysis, despite a drop in its circulation base since last month. The Financial Times also performed well; its sales increased by 19% over the period. The Times saw the greatest drop in its circulation base, down 3%.

Mid Market The mid-market dropped slightly in a year on year analysis, with the Daily Express and the Sunday Express falling by 3.4% and 2% respectively. The Daily Mail, however, added a further 22,000 copies to its circulation base.

Popular Market The popular market saw the greatest losses in a year on year analysis, falling 4% overall. All daily titles dropped, the most significant falls coming from the Daily Record (down 7.3%) and the Sunday People (down 6.6%). Sport First, however, increased its circulation base by 17% during the period.
