National Newspaper NRS – August 1998
The latest NRS figures for national newspapers show that only one paper, The Mirror, managed to make any kind of gain in readership year on year for the six months March-August 1998. The Mirror now has around 6.4 million readers.
It is understood, however, that the Mirror Group has admitted that circulation/sales of the paper for September are to fall behind the Daily Mail for the first time. This will be reported in the next ABC data release on 9 October.
In terms of readership, the Mail lost almost 150,000 readers year on year for this period. The Daily Telegraph lost 367,000 readers year on year but continues to lead the daily broadsheet market.
As with last month The Guardian suffered the greatest relative loss of readership, down by 17.0%. Loss of readers at The Independent appears to be slowing; the paper now has just under 700,000 readers.
