National Papers Get In On ITV Takeovers

National newspaper owners have intervened in Peter Brooke’s plans to allow ITV companies the right to take over one another, by amending the 1990 Broadcasting Act (Newsline 27/5).
Companies including the Mirror Group, the Telegraph and the Daily Mail are putting pressure on Brooke to lift restrictions preventing national papers from owning more than 20% of a TV company. Chief executive of Mirror Group, David Montgomery, believes that publishers should be unrestricted in their involvement in the future development of television. Brooke is due to meet with the 15 ITV companies today to discuss proposed amendments.
