National Press Round-Up – June ABCs
The Quality Market
The Daily Telegraph is still the highest selling paper in this sector, selling 1,090,505 copies in June and increasing 3.4% year-on-year. The Financial Times saw the greatest increase in sales in this sector, rising 8.5% to record 326,676 in June 1997. There is no let-up in site for The Independent the paper lost 17% in sales year-on-year.
The Sunday Times is still holding the leader’s flag in the Sunday quality sector, although The Sunday Telegraph is putting-up a strong fight. The Sunday Telegraph saw its circulation rise by just under 25% year-on-year to record 853,956 sales in June.
The Mid Market
The Mail is still storming ahead of The Express in both the daily and the Sunday markets, and both the Daily Mail and the Mail On Sunday have seen moderate year-on-year rises.
The Tabloid Market
The Sun is still the unrivaled leader in this group selling 3,789,168 copies in June 1997. Nevertheless, all the titles in this sector saw a drop in sales year-on-year of between 2 and 4.6%. The News Of The World is still Britain’s favourite Sunday paper, selling 4,331,800 copies in June. This compares to the market loser, The Sunday Sport, which sold just 282,238 copies last month.
