National Press Round-Up – May ABCs
The Daily Telegraph is still the highest selling paper in this sector, selling 1,132,789 copies in May. This represents a 6.5% market share and an 8.9% increase for the last 6 monthly period year-on-year. The Times is also seeing an increase in sales in this period rising from 669,640 from December to May 1996 to 749,598 for December to May 1997. The Independent, meanwhile, has seen no improvement, it fell 8.86% for the year-on-year six monthly period to May 1997.
The Sun is still the unrivaled leader in the daily tabloid group and indeed is Britain’s most popular paper; it has a 21.8% market share and sold 3,913,779 copies between December 1996 and May 1997. Although sales of The Sun actually fell 3.55% compared to the same period the previous year. The Daily Mail is the only paper in this sector to have increased sales in this period, rising 4.42%, and selling 3,913,779 copies from December 1996 to 1997.
