NBC, the US television network, is close to buying Super Channel, the European satellite television channel.
Super Channel is broadcast via the Eutelstat satellite, the rival to Astra which carries Sky’s channels. Super Channel resisted a takeover bid from United Artists Entertainment in 1990, but has recently decided that it should be part of a media conglomerate. The deal is expected to value Super Channel at $70m, and will enable it to pay off its debts, believed to be more than £15m.
Completion of the deal is expected within 10 days.
