Neil Wallis To Be Deputy Editor Of News Of The World

The editorial shake-up at News International has continued today with the news that Neil Wallis, editor of The People, is to become deputy editor of the News Of The World.
The move follows the promotion of Andy Coulson to editor of the paper earlier this week, which left a question mark as to who would fill the deputy position (see New News Of The World Editor Given Murdoch’s Backing).
Coulson took up the editor’s role after it was announced News of the World editor, Rebekah Wade would be moving to the editor’s position at sister title The Sun (see New Sun Editor Says Job Is Best In Newspapers), following the resignation of editor David Yelland to pursue a management career (see Yelland Quits As Editor Of The Sun).
It is believed the move came as a surprise to Mirror Group Newspapers, who said in a statement: “Neil, who has been editor for five years, informed us today that he is to leave with immediate effect to take up the post of deputy editor of the News of the World.”
Managing Director, National Newspapers Mark Haysom added: “Neil is a great editor and we are very sorry to see him leave the company. We wish him all the best in his new role.”
The People’s deputy editor, Alan Edwards, will edit the paper until a successor is appointed.
