New Aberdeen Newspaper To Launch

A new regional newspaper for the Aberdeen area is due to launch in March; the Aberdeen & District Independent will be a free, full-colour tabloid with an initial distribution of around 100,000, concentrated in the city area. The newspaper will also go to several communities in the commuter belt.

Two newspaper entrepreneurs, Keith Barwell and Bill Alder are behind the launch they worked together on Barwell’s Luton Herald group; Alder then left to found the Milton Keynes Citizen. The Aberdeen & District Independent will be edited by Jonathan Moore, former head of news on Northsound radio.

The Independent will break the age-old monopoly of the Aberdeen Journals, which have virtually had a monopoly in the area since 1928, at a time when Northcliffe Newspapers is poised to buy Aberdeen Journals once it receives the go-ahead from the DTI.

Amra has been appointed to handle national sales for the Aberdeen & District Independent.
