New app allows viewers to share favourite moments from shows

A new app developed by Showcaster in partnership with Sky will allow viewers to legally share their favourite moments from television shows.

Grabyo will enable viewers to take a clip of the previous 20 seconds of a show and then share it in real time across social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, and will only be allowed to record programmes by agreement with the broadcaster – ultimately avoiding breaches of copyright.

The clips will incorporate promotional messages and advertising, which will allow sponsors to extend their association with the show to the social conversation.

Grabyo has already been launched in conjunction with Britain and Irelenad’s Next Top Model on Sky Living, with the support of the sponsors of the show. Viewers are directed from Facebook and Twitter to the Grabyo site where they can create and share the clips.

Creating clips for Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model can also be done directly on Facebook via a tab on TRESemme’s Facebook page – the show’s sponsor.

“Broadcasters are, and quite understandably, protective over their content,” Grabyo founder and CEO Will Neale told TechCrunch. “That said, we’ve had an extremely positive response from broadcasters as we enable them to retain ownership of their content and control the experience, whilst driving social engagement and generating incremental ad revenues.

“Not only are we helping broadcasters to drive social buzz around their shows, but we are also enabling them to generate incremental ad revenues – by giving brands the opportunity to extend TV sponsorship into social media. This is very attractive to both broadcasters and brand sponsors.”
