The struggle to control the US telecoms giant MCI has deepened with a rival bid coming from GTE, another American telecoms operator, worth $28 billion.
MCI is already considering rival bids from BT and WorldCom, worth $17 billion and $30 billion respectively. If the GTE move is successful it is expected that it will join BT to create a three-way alliance with MCI.
