New Broadcasting Bill Delayed

New Broadcasting Bill Delayed

The government’s new Broadcasting Bill, announced in the Queen’s speech this month, is expected to be delayed. It was expected to come before the House of Lords within two weeks, but is now unlikely to be introduced in parliament until the new year.

The delay is believed to be due to disagreements between the Department of National Heritage and the Department of Trade and Industry on the wording of key provisions; policy issues have all been agreed in the cabinet, leaving lawyers to agree on final wordings. The Bill’s urgency comes from a desire to launch digital terrestrial television as soon as possible.
