New Chairman Of PCC Calls For Stronger Self Regulation

Lord Wakeham, the former leader of the House of Lords, was yesterday confirmed as the new chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, replacing Lord McGregor, who steps down at the end of the year.

The appointment of Lord Wakeham, considered a political heavyweight, underlines the industry’s determination to defend criticisms that press self- regulation has failed.

Lord Wakeham commented, “The task now is not simply to maintain self-regulation but to strengthen it – to put its survival beyond the bounds of reasonable political debate. That is vital not just for the sake of the press but for the health of our democracy.”
