New Chief Broadband Officer Role Created At BT

BT has announced the appointment of Alison Ritchie to the newly created role of chief broadband officer.

The role will see Ritchie direct BT’s policy on broadband development across the entire group. The telecoms company hopes the creation of a management position solely focused on broadband is a positive step towards ensuring the successful delivery of all broadcast activities.

Ben Verwaayen, BT’s chief executive, commented: “We are one of the first businesses to appoint a chief broadband officer, a decision that underlines just how central broadband is to BT.”

Ritchie will step aside from the day to day running of BT Openworld for regulatory reasons and management responsibility for the division will be handed over to John Butler, who is currently director of new services and strategy.

BT could face the scrutiny of the Competition Commission (see BT Broadband Faces Competition Commission Inquiry), after Freeserve claimed that the company has capitalised on its dominant position in the telecoms market to gain an unfair advantage over rival internet service providers (see Freeserve Calls On Oftel To Investigate BT).
