New Company To Enter Bids For National Digital Radio Licence
Bids for the only national digital radio multiplex licence are to receive another player shortly, as a company called Digital Media Broadcasting (DMB) prepares to submit its application. The company, which is headed by ex-Planet 24 figure, Peter Leutner, will compete with the Digital One consortium for the extra space on the multiplex.
Leutner’s pitch for DMB is that it will strive to provide as many entirely new services as possible. He believes that the big players like Classic FM are liable to provide an identical or very similar service to that which they already broadcast on analogue. He proposes a ‘liberal approach’ to creating new services which he believes will add greater commercial value to DMB as it strives to reach new, rather than existing audiences.
DMB has been in consultation with the Radio Authority for a year now and must submit its proposals for the licence by 23 June. Should the company win, it will run the multiplex system and ‘rent’ out the broadcasting space; it will not be involved in the production or development of any programming content. The three national commercial stations, Classic FM, Talk Radio and Virgin are all guaranteed a space on the multiplex, whichever company wins the licence.
Digital Media Broadcasting is a joint project between Castle Transmission International, Intelfax, Grundig and Bosch.
