New Creative Director For Wallpaper

Paul Kurzeja, formerly group art director of Future Network, has been poached by IPC to be the creative director of Wallpaper*.

Kurzeja is said to enjoy a reputation in the magazine industry as the “designer’s designer” and has previously won four PPA and Total Publishing awards for art direction and design. He has also chaired seminars on cutting-edge magazine design and photography and given lectures to graphic design and photography students.

All this should stand him in good stead for a role at style bible Wallpaper*. The title has seen some changing times recently, beginning with IPC’s decision, following the AOL/Time Warner deal last year, to have the brand’s creator Tyler Brűlé report to IPC Southbank MD Mike Soutar (see InStyle Moves To IPC Southbank) and culminating in Brűlé’s departure from the magazine last month (see Brûlé Gives Bibles Of Cool Cold Shoulder). Kurzeja will report to Christina Ferrari, who has been acting editorial director since Brűlé’s decision to leave.

In the July – December 2001 ABC figures, Wallpaper*’s circulation saw a year on year fall of 1.8% to just under 132,000. However, the title has held onto its circulation of around 130,000 for the past two years and remains of interest to the industry not least for its dedicated targeting of an advertiser-friendly young ABC1 audience.
