New Editor For Veteran IPC Weekly

New Editor For Veteran IPC Weekly

IPC Connect has announced that former Woman’s Journal editor Elsa McAlonan is to take over from Terry Tavner as editor of Womans Own .

Before editing the septagenarian women’s monthly title, which was axed along with five other titles following the takeover of IPC by AOL Time Warner (see IPC Closes Six Magazines), McAlonan had been deputy editor of Marie Claire and previous to that held editorial posts within the Mirror Group’s Scottish newspaper stable.

The new position will see McAlonan move into the women’s weekly market, which saw a year on year drop in overall circulation in last summer’s ABC results (see Newsline). Nevertheless, she described the market as “the place to be”, commenting: “Taking over as editor of such a well known magazine is a huge challenge and one that I’m extremely excited about.”

Woman’s Own first went on sale in 1932, and has seen competition step up in the last decade or so, with titles such as Take A Break, Thats Life! and Woman’s Own’s new editor will use her tabloid newspaper and monthly magazine experience to good effect on circulation figures which have been sliding over the past five years (see below).
