Yesterday saw the launch of a new national telephone network operated by Energis, part of the National Grid Company, which transmits electricity throughout Britain. Energis, as well as offering 10% less on weekdays and 15% less on weekend calls than BT, are also intending to offer a range of multimedia services, including video on demand, home shopping, banking and video-conferencing. “This is just the beginning. This is the UK’s first information superhighway carrying multimedia”, says chief executive David Dey.
The telephone network is available immediately; but it will be 1995 and beyond before the full multimedia services are available. Energis told MediaTel that the highway is already in place, but the services are not yet ready.
