New Head Of Oftel Appointed
Margaret Beckett, President of the Board of Trade, has appointed David Edmonds as director general of telecommunications watchdog Oftel. Edmonds was previously a director at NatWest Group.
He replaces Don Cruickshank, who announced his resignation last year (subscribers see Cruickshank Steps Down From Oftel), and will take up the position on April 1.
Commenting on the appointment, which surprised the industry because of Edmonds’ lack of experience in telecommunications, Margaret Beckett said: “The rate of change is set to increase in this already fast-moving, international arena with the convergence of telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology. The Government wishes to promote the further development of competition and continue to encourage innovation in services and technology. I wished therefore to appoint someone who had direct experience of managing significant change and of working in a competitive business environment.”
